The Johns Creek City Council is considering creating a one percent sales tax to pay for new schools and other projects.
Local voters can go the polls on March 20 to decide whether to extend the sales tax for another five years. The money would be used for additional classroom space and technology, which would allow general funds to be used in classrooms.
In Johns Creek, the sales tax revenues would pay for improvements at each elementary, middle and high school as well as a new $60 million-plus high school. According to Fulton County Schools, more than 20,000 new students enrolled over the past 10 years, and an additional 19,000 students are expected by 2012. |

Johns Creek has dropped popular Fulton County summer camp that took place in the city before it was incorporated.
This is a little strange, given that the city has set aside $750,000 just for legal fees, many of them related to the Love Shack affair.
The camp, used by more than 130 kids ages 6 to 12, has run by the county for 10 years, but Fulton County is closing many of its summer camps.
The camp program was funded largely through taxes collected by a special services district in unincorporated parts of the county. When the city became a legal entity Dec. 1, the special services district went away — and so did the funding for the camp.
"I would have to spend all my time getting it ready," said Kirk Franz, Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Department's manager and sole employee. "I would have to hire staff, make sure they're trained, arrange for meals, trips."
Mayor Mike Bodker said the dropping of the eight-week camp was unfortunate.
"It's one of those unintended transition bumps in the road," he said. "This won't be the last of it. We don't want to take any steps backward."
