Johns Creek May Raise Sales Tax for Schools

The Johns Creek City Council is considering creating a one percent sales tax to pay for new schools and other projects.

Local voters can go the polls on March 20 to decide whether to extend the sales tax for another five years. The money would be used for additional classroom space and technology, which would allow general funds to be used in classrooms.

In Johns Creek, the sales tax revenues would pay for improvements at each elementary, middle and high school as well as a new $60 million-plus high school. According to Fulton County Schools, more than 20,000 new students enrolled over the past 10 years, and an additional 19,000 students are expected by 2012.

The Fulton County School System has mismanaged the last two SPLOST one cent sale tax programs and they will continue to mismanage the program. Liz Houseman knows first hand of the two bungled programs. They disbanded their school Capitol Programs Department and outsourced the construction to Parsons Program Management company in the hopes that they would save the school Board some money and Parsons has actually cost the school Board twelve times or 24 million dollars more then what their own internal department would have cost them. That is the cost of one middle school. Also, the school system has NEVER completed all the projects that they have told the public they would finish in order to pay new school budget cost overruns. I will not be voting for more money for an organization who can not manage themselves or a large program such as building new schools.
